Alcaraz, who had a championship point at one time, broke down in tears after the Serb’s victory in the Cincinnati Open final. Djokovic triumphed in what he called his “toughest test” after overcoming four championship points from Alcaraz, proving why he is the greatest in the industry. Alcaraz, however, suffered a terrible loss.

The No. 2-seeded Djokovic avenged his loss to the top-ranked Alcaraz last month by winning the match that lasted 3 hours, 49 minutes, the longest best-of-three sets final in ATP Tour history (since 1990). He also earned his 95th career title, passing Ivan Lendl for third place among men in the professional era, which dates back to 1968.

Due to COVID-19 limitations, Djokovic was competing in his first competition on American soil in two years. On his fifth match point, when Alcaraz missed his forehand return on his fifth match point, he won his third Cincinnati title in six years.

During the post-match trophy presentation, the winner of a men’s-record 23 Grand Slam championships commented, “This was one of the most exciting matches I’ve ever played in any tournament.” It was “like a Grand Slam,”

After the match, the Spaniard broke down in tears as he gave a touching homage to his brother and his squad.

To my squad, we are working really hard to remain at this level, play these kind of matches, and make these finals, he remarked. I’m appreciative to work with a group like yours. You are a tremendous example for me, and I learn from you every day, therefore I want to thank you all not just in the professional sense but also in the personal sense. Additionally, my brother is present. It’s wonderful to having you here, encouraging me daily and helping me grow as a person as I learn from you. So I want to say a big thank you for being here.
